Engineers Week: Innovation and Opportunity at Shive-Hattery

Engineers Week is an annual celebration of the engineering profession and the critical role engineers play in shaping our communities and world.

This year, several Shive-Hattery team members were featured in the 2026 Cedar Rapids Gazette Engineers Week special issue, produced in partnership with the Iowa Engineering Society.

The coverage highlights two areas central to our firm’s mission: developing future talent and embracing innovation.

Embracing AI to Enhance Engineering Excellence

In “Local engineers embrace AI tools to boost productivity, streamline processes,” Shive-Hattery President Jennifer Bennett and Chief Information Officer Corey Weeklund share how Shive-Hattery is thoughtfully integrating artificial intelligence into our daily work.

The article highlights how our teams are using tools like Microsoft Copilot to streamline tasks such as research, drafting, internal searches, and meeting documentation — freeing up time for higher-value problem solving and creative thinking. Rather than replacing expertise, AI is serving as a powerful complement to it.

As the story emphasizes, engineering judgment remains essential. Technology can accelerate processes, but human insight, context, and experience are what ultimately drive quality outcomes for clients and communities.

Internships: Building the Next Generation of Engineers

The second feature, “Internships crucial step into engineering field,” shines a spotlight on the vital role internships play in launching engineering careers. And, how Shive-Hattery supports students as they transition from classroom learning to real-world impact.

The article shares stories of former interns, like Claire Recker and Luke Mulholland, who are now full-time engineers at the firm, underscoring how hands-on experience builds both technical skills and professional confidence. Interns at Shive-Hattery work on meaningful projects, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and gain exposure to real clients and communities.

The result? Talent Partner, Connor Moellenbeck, says is a strong track record of interns returning after graduation, already familiar with our culture, processes, and commitment to design excellence.
